CRC 1194 “Interaction between transport and wetting processes”

Forced wetting and de-wetting on complex surfaces – Generic configuration immersed body

Generic test benches are used to address research questions on the influence of macroscopic structures on forced and spontaneous dynamic wetting and dewetting with and without heat transport. From the experimental investigations and analyses, a basic understanding as well as models for the description of the interactions are formulated.

Investigation of fast de-wetting from substrates with complex surface morphologies

The focus is on forced dewetting phenomena, development of instabilities and emergence of the cavitation in a fast stretching liquid bridge formed between two solid substrates. The study is performed using an experimental setup which provides a controlled, constant acceleration of one of the plates.

Droplet/spray impact onto wall films of different compositions

How do droplets/sprays and wall films interact? Chemical compositions of droplets/sprays are chosen differently from wall films to mimic processes relevant for in-cylinder engine flows and exhaust gas systems. Modeling these interactions will be tackled using results from detailed experiments.

DNS of heat, momentum and mass transfer near walls

The focus is on exchange processes between fluid and walls. Models will be developed that are universally suited for application in complex geometries. Boundary layers will be investigated that are not yet fully developed. Based on eddy-resolving models implemented into innovative hybrid LES and VLES approaches, the dynamics of the entire Reynolds-stress sub-grid tensor will be considered.

Impact of supercooled droplets onto cold surfaces

The impact of supercooled water drops onto cold surfaces is examined experimentally, theoretically and numerically. Based on experimental observations, theoretical models for the description of drop impact, nucleation and solidification close to a solid wall are derived and validated by means of numerical simulations. The aimed is to combe the models into a prediction of the entire process.

Interaction of a single drop with a heated wall at high ambient pressures

Spray impact models will be developed for prediction of the main parameters of the secondary spray (drop diameter, velocity, and the splashed mass ratio) and for prediction of the heat flux densities during spray cooling at different thermodynamic regimes. Additionally, different smart surfaces will be examined for possible control of spray impact and spray cooling.

EU-funded projects

MUSIC-HAIC

Experiments will be performed on single ice particle impact onto surfaces in order to deliver essential data for advancing impact and accretion models. Theoretical models will be formulated in a manner suitable for implementation into 2D and 3D icing codes.

ICE GENESIS

The project will create the next generation of 3D simulation means for icing. We improve and validate current 2D and 3D numerical tools with respect to snow conditions, so that they can be used for both design and certification of aircraft, rotorcraft and engines.

SURFICE is an experimental, theoretical and engineering project which will lead to the formulation of a rational framework for the design and the fabrication of a category of discontinuity-enhanced icephobic surfaces that will be tested for industrially relevant applications.
