Dynamics of drops and sprays

Research topics include

  • drop generation
  • drop impact onto dry and wetted walls
  • drop solidification (supercooled large drops) on cooled walls or drop impact onto surfaces above the Leidenfrost temperature,
  • shear-driven drop motion on surfaces and
  • drop deformation and breakup in flows.

The topic of wetting and dewetting of liquids on complex surfaces is also a focus of this research group, a topic relevant to vehicle soiling or airframe icing. Numerous projects have investigated the atomization of liquids using various techniques, especially for applications like fuel injection, spray drying or spray painting. A number of projects are concerned also with the development of measurement techniques for drops and sprays, typically using optical techniques.
